Create a safety plan
Even experienced pet sitters can have unfortunate incidents with the animals they're caring for. Anything can happen and it's important to know what to do if something does occur during your booking and who to call.
Call the Owner
No matter what happens, the most important aspect of handling any emergency situation is to make sure you have good communication with both the Owner and with Mad Paws.
In your Meet and Greet you should have asked the owner for an additional Emergency Contact and their vet.
The Owner should be kept fully informed if something does happen as they may be able to provide their inside knowledge of their pet. They should also be involved in making decisions on the best course of action, whether it be a veterinary treatment, or how to handle certain behaviour.
Call us
Let us know as soon as possible 02 8046 6536 or email service@madpaws.com.au with "EMERGENCY" in the subject line, explaining what happened, which steps were undertaken, and if the pet is fine or still in critical condition. Save our number in case you need it in the future.
Act
In the rare circumstance where the Owner or Emergency Contact is unable to be contacted, you should take the steps necessary to ensure the animal's welfare. If the animal is injured or needs treatment take the pet to the local vet or vet clinic.
If the owner doesn't have a preferred vet, we recommend you contact Pawssum on 1300 343 580. Pawssum operates in every capital city in Australia and will send a vet directly to you. Communicating with the Owner about the pet's health and care will allow you to agree on the payment for the treatment of the animal.
